So, you’re deciding on a projector screen for your presentations and signage? Welcome to a vast world of projector screens! Many companies, like you, select to use projectors and screens for various reasons: the size of the image or the cost, to name a few. If you are reading this, then you have started your search to make the right selection.

Most likely have noticed there are choices galore! So, how are you going to choose what’s right for your environment? Let’s break it down to simplify. Here are some things to consider.

Above Ceiling, Below Ceiling, or Fixed?

Above Ceiling

If you want to hide the housing, then above the ceiling is what you will want. The screen rolls through a slot in the ceiling and retracts into the ceiling housing when done. Out of sight, out of mind.

Extra costs to consider: Electrician for power (electric screens) Contractor for the reworking of ceiling grid or ceiling structure (above ceiling screens) Also take note: Before purchasing an above ceiling screen, pay attention to the clearance above the ceiling to make sure the screen will fit!

Wall or ceiling mounted

These types are easier to install and do save costs. The housing is also made to be somewhat aesthetically pleasing and generally come in white or black.

Fixed screens

These mount to the wall and hang similar to a picture.

Manual or Electric?

Electric screens

These afford you the opportunity of being user-friendly and are controllable (if a low voltage controller accompanies them). Some use a wall switch for UP/STOP/DOWN or wireless remote control. Others will integrate the screen into a room control system, whereby a single push of a button simultaneously lowers the screen, turns on the projector and adjusts other aspects of the room (shades and lighting).

Manual screens

These are less costly than electric and have come a long way in recent years due to some manufacturers inserting better retraction mechanisms, making it easier for the user to raise and lower the screen.

Aspect Ratio and Size

Aspect Ratio

We recommend looking at what the native aspect ratio is of your projector. 16:9; 16;10 or whatever it is, then that is the aspect ratio of the screen.

Size

The size of the room will govern the size of your screen. As a rule of thumb, measure the distance from the projection screen surface to the furthest seat at the back of the room. Divide that distance by six. Now you have a recommended height of screen surface. So, for example, if the furthest seat away is 36’ from the screen, then the height of the projection screen should be around 6’ in height (You don’t have to be exact). This calculation will give you a reasonable estimate as to the size of the screen for your room. Or, use a projector calculator (most projector manufactures have one on their site)

Projector Screen Material

The type of projector screen material you select can impact your image dramatically. Mate White is typical in commercial installations, and however, with the demand for higher contract and better image on larger surfaces and brighter rooms, there are options. Options include grey or even darker materials. We have recently installed a screen in a well-lighted place, and the image is close to that of an LCD monitor! As I said, there are options to get the right material to enhance your projected image.

There is now an online tool that allows you to check if this material will work in a certain room. This is called the Screen Innovations Screen Material Wizard
